006 Slenderman, Lee Brickley and Updates!

www.ghosttrust.com :: This episode I go off on a bit of a rant about the slender man sighting in/on Cannock Chase and Lee Brickley’s spurious involvement.

Also on the show… A new member of the Ghost Trust, Broken ankle updates, thoughts about evp communication from inside cars and musing on organised paid for hunts.

Hey there, love the podcast. I know I’m a bit late in making this comment – I only just got around to listening to this episode – but I noticed you asserted that Slenderman is a complete fabrication and not in any way a rehashing of an old legend. I’m afraid it is a rehash.

There’s not much info about it online as far as I can tell, apart from copypastas linking it to Slenderman, but ‘Der Grossman’ is an actual German legend and does seem to be the basis for Slenderman. My German great-grandmother told me this ‘fairy tale’ (her words) when I was a child, long before Slenderman graced the pages of SomethingAwful. Der Grossman is even alluded to in Moby-Dick by Herman Melville. In the chapter ‘The Whiteness of the Whale’ – a very long chapter about why things that are white are inherently scary – you’ll find the following:

‘…why, in reading the old fairy tales of Central Europe, does “the tall pale man” of the Hartz forests, whose changeless pallor unrustlingly glides through the green of the groves–why is this phantom more terrible than all the whooping imps of the Blocksburg?’

So while I definitely agree with you that Slenderman is not real, I also don’t want that guy from SomethingAwful getting all the credit for creating a character he simply embellished and re-branded.
